Borderline Personality Disorder Treatment in Illinois
Borderline personality disorder is marked by intense emotions, unstable relationships, a shifting sense of self, and impulsive behavior that can feel impossible to control. People with BPD often describe living without an emotional skin, where small events trigger overwhelming feelings. BPD carries a lot of stigma, but it is one of the most treatable personality disorders when the right therapy is used.
Forrest Behavioral Health provides outpatient BPD treatment in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, built around dialectical behavior therapy. Our day treatment, intensive outpatient, evening, and outpatient programs serve adults across Schaumburg, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Elgin, and the Chicago suburbs.

What Is Borderline Personality Disorder?
Borderline personality disorder is a mental health condition characterized by a long-standing pattern of instability in emotions, self-image, relationships, and behavior. It typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood and is thought to develop from a combination of a biologically sensitive temperament and an environment that did not teach skills for managing intense emotion, often including trauma or neglect.
BPD is frequently misdiagnosed as bipolar disorder, depression, or anxiety, and many people go years without an accurate diagnosis. It commonly co-occurs with depression, PTSD, eating disorders, and substance use. Our evaluation takes a careful look at emotional patterns, relationships, and history so that treatment targets the right condition from the start.

How We Treat Borderline Personality Disorder at Forrest Behavioral Health
BPD responds to structured, skills-based therapy delivered consistently over time. After a comprehensive assessment, your care team recommends a level of care and a plan centered on dialectical behavior therapy, with psychiatric support and treatment for any co-occurring conditions.
Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
DBT was developed specifically for BPD and remains the treatment with the strongest evidence. It combines individual therapy with skills training in four areas: mindfulness, distress tolerance, emotion regulation, and interpersonal effectiveness. Clients learn concrete tools for surviving crises without making them worse, managing intense emotion, and building relationships that last.
Day Treatment Program (PHP)
When symptoms are severe, including frequent crises or self-harm, our day treatment program provides daily DBT skills groups, individual therapy, and psychiatric care five days a week, offering a safe alternative to repeated hospitalization.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program delivers DBT skills and individual therapy several times a week while you maintain work, school, or family responsibilities. An evening IOP is available.
Outpatient Therapy
Ongoing weekly DBT-informed therapy through our outpatient program helps you keep practicing skills and maintain stability after a higher level of care.
Psychiatric Care and Medication Management
There is no medication that treats BPD itself, but medication can help with co-occurring depression, anxiety, or mood instability. Our psychiatric providers evaluate carefully and avoid unnecessary polypharmacy.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Substance use is common in BPD as a way to numb emotional pain and often fuels impulsive behavior. Our dual diagnosis program treats BPD and substance use together with one integrated team.
Frequently Asked Questions About BPD Treatment
Is borderline personality disorder treatable?
Yes. Research shows that with DBT and consistent care, the majority of people with BPD experience substantial improvement, and many no longer meet criteria for the diagnosis over time.
What is the difference between BPD and bipolar disorder?
Bipolar mood episodes last days to weeks and are often unrelated to events. BPD mood shifts are faster, often lasting hours, and are usually triggered by interpersonal stress. The two require different treatment, which is why accurate diagnosis matters.
Does insurance cover BPD treatment in Illinois?
Most commercial insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, including DBT-based PHP and IOP. We will verify your benefits for free before you begin.
Can family members be involved?
Yes. Family sessions and education help loved ones understand BPD, respond to crises more effectively, and support the skills being learned in treatment.
Do you offer telehealth for BPD treatment?
Yes. We provide in-person care at our Hoffman Estates clinic and secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Illinois.

Other Programs
Outpatient Program (OP)
The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
