LGBTQ+ Affirming Mental Health Treatment

LGBTQ+ adults face higher rates of depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use than the general population, not because of who they are but because of what they have been through: discrimination, rejection, minority stress, and too often a healthcare system that did not understand them. Forrest Behavioral Health provides affirming, respectful treatment in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, where your identity is never the problem to be solved.

Our clinicians are committed to care that respects your name, pronouns, relationships, and experience, and our programs treat the depression, anxiety, trauma, and substance use that minority stress so often produces.

What Affirming Care Means at Forrest

Affirming care means we start from the understanding that being LGBTQ+ is a healthy part of human diversity. Your identity is not a diagnosis, and treatment will never aim to change it. We ask about and use your correct name and pronouns, we recognize your partner and chosen family as family, and we understand that experiences like coming out, family rejection, transition, and discrimination can be sources of both resilience and pain.

At the same time, we do not assume that your identity is the reason you are seeking help. Many LGBTQ+ clients come to us for the same reasons anyone does, and they deserve clinicians who can focus on that without making it awkward. Our staff receive training in LGBTQ+ cultural competence, and we welcome feedback if we fall short.

How We Tailor Treatment for LGBTQ+ Adults

Treatment follows the same evidence-based model as all of our programs, delivered with awareness of how minority stress and identity shape mental health.

Trauma-Informed, Identity-Affirming Therapy

Our therapists use CBT, DBT, and EMDR to treat depression, anxiety, and trauma, including trauma rooted in discrimination or rejection, in an environment where you do not have to explain or defend who you are.

Substance Use Treatment

Our dual diagnosis program addresses alcohol and drug use together with the mental health conditions behind it, with attention to the social contexts in which use often begins.

Family and Partner Involvement

Family and couples sessions include partners and chosen family, and can help with reconciliation with family of origin when that is what you want.

Programs That Fit Your Schedule

Our day treatment program, intensive outpatient program, evening IOP, and outpatient program offer a range of intensity, and telehealth is available across Illinois for clients who cannot attend in person every time.

Conditions We Treat

We provide integrated care for depression, anxiety, PTSD and trauma, bipolar disorder, OCD, and co-occurring substance use, with psychiatric medication management available on site.

Frequently Asked Questions

Are your groups safe for LGBTQ+ clients?

Group members agree to respect and confidentiality as a condition of participation, and our facilitators actively maintain that standard. If you ever feel unsafe in a group, tell your therapist and we will address it immediately.

Do you provide gender-affirming medical care?

We provide mental health and substance use treatment, not hormone therapy or surgical referrals. We are glad to coordinate with your gender-affirming medical providers and to provide letters of support when appropriate.

Is treatment confidential?

Yes. Your treatment is protected by HIPAA and, for substance use treatment, by additional federal confidentiality rules. Nothing is shared with an employer, school, or anyone else without your written consent, except in the narrow situations required by law.

Does insurance cover treatment?

Most commercial insurance plans cover outpatient mental health and substance use treatment, including PHP and IOP. We will verify your benefits for free before you begin.

What if I am in crisis right now?

If you are in danger or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Other Programs

Outpatient Program (OP)

The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
