OCD Treatment in Illinois

Obsessive-compulsive disorder is far more than a preference for order. It is a cycle of unwanted, intrusive thoughts and the repetitive behaviors or mental rituals a person feels driven to perform to relieve the anxiety those thoughts create. OCD can consume hours each day and is often hidden out of shame, but it is highly treatable with specialized therapy.

Forrest Behavioral Health provides outpatient OCD treatment in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, using exposure and response prevention and other evidence-based approaches. Our day treatment, intensive outpatient, evening, and outpatient programs serve adults across Schaumburg, Palatine, Arlington Heights, Elgin, and the Chicago suburbs.

What Is OCD?

Obsessive-compulsive disorder involves obsessions, which are persistent, unwanted thoughts, images, or urges that cause intense anxiety, and compulsions, which are behaviors or mental acts performed to reduce that anxiety or prevent something bad from happening. The relief is temporary, so the cycle repeats, and over time the rituals grow. OCD affects roughly one in forty adults and typically begins in adolescence or early adulthood.

OCD takes many forms beyond the stereotypes. Common themes include contamination and cleaning, checking and doubt, symmetry and ordering, taboo or violent intrusive thoughts, relationship doubts, and scrupulosity. Some people have mostly mental compulsions, such as reviewing, counting, or seeking reassurance, with few visible rituals. Because OCD is frequently misdiagnosed as generalized anxiety or depression, our assessment specifically screens for it.

How We Treat OCD at Forrest Behavioral Health

OCD does not respond well to general talk therapy. It requires specific, structured treatment. After a thorough evaluation, your care team matches you to the right level of care and builds a plan around the approaches with the strongest evidence for OCD.

Exposure and Response Prevention (ERP)

ERP is the gold-standard therapy for OCD. With your therapist’s guidance, you gradually face the situations or thoughts that trigger obsessions while resisting the compulsion that usually follows. Over time, the brain learns that the anxiety passes on its own and that the feared outcome does not occur. ERP is challenging but highly effective, and it is built into every level of care we offer.

Day Treatment Program (PHP)

When OCD is severe enough to interfere with basic functioning, our day treatment program provides daily ERP practice, individual and group therapy, and psychiatric care five days a week, with clients returning home each evening.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program meets several times a week and gives you enough frequency for ERP to gain momentum while you continue with work or school. An evening IOP is available.

Outpatient Therapy

Weekly ERP-based therapy through our outpatient program is appropriate for milder OCD and for maintaining gains after a higher level of care.

Psychiatric Care and Medication Management

SSRIs, often at higher doses than used for depression, can meaningfully reduce OCD symptoms and make ERP easier to engage in. Our psychiatric providers evaluate whether medication is appropriate and coordinate closely with your therapist.

Treating Co-Occurring Conditions

OCD commonly occurs alongside depression, anxiety disorders, tic disorders, and substance use. Our integrated team, including our dual diagnosis program, treats the whole picture rather than one condition at a time.

Frequently Asked Questions About OCD Treatment

I have disturbing intrusive thoughts. Does that mean I am dangerous?

No. Intrusive thoughts in OCD are unwanted and the opposite of what the person values, which is exactly why they cause so much distress. Having them is not a sign of intent, and treating them is a routine part of OCD care.

Is ERP really necessary? Can I just talk about it?

Talk therapy alone rarely reduces OCD, and seeking reassurance can make it worse. ERP is the treatment with the strongest evidence, and our therapists pace it carefully so it is manageable.

Does insurance cover OCD treatment in Illinois?

Most commercial insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, including PHP and IOP for OCD. We will verify your benefits for free before you begin.

How long does OCD treatment take?

Many people see meaningful improvement within twelve to twenty ERP sessions, and intensive programs can compress that timeline. Ongoing maintenance helps keep symptoms from returning.

Do you offer telehealth for OCD?

Yes. We offer in-person care in Hoffman Estates and secure telehealth across Illinois. ERP can be delivered effectively by video, and home-based exposures are sometimes easier that way.

What if I am in crisis right now?

If you are in danger or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 or go to the nearest emergency room. Once you are safe, we can help you take the next step.

Other Programs

Outpatient Program (OP)

The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
