What Is Depression?

Major depressive disorder is a mood disorder marked by a persistently low mood or loss of interest that lasts at least two weeks and interferes with daily life. It affects how you think, feel, sleep, eat, and function at work or school. Depression is one of the most common mental health conditions in the United States, and it is also one of the most treatable.

Depression takes several forms. Persistent depressive disorder involves milder symptoms that last two years or more. Seasonal affective disorder follows the shorter, darker days of a Chicago winter. Postpartum depression appears after childbirth, and depression frequently occurs alongside anxiety, trauma, or substance use. Our clinicians complete a full assessment so that treatment targets the specific type of depression you are experiencing rather than a one-size-fits-all plan.

Signs and Symptoms of Depression

Depression looks different from person to person. Some people feel deep sadness; others feel numb, irritable, or exhausted. A diagnosis typically involves five or more of the following symptoms present most of the day, nearly every day, for at least two weeks:

How We Treat Depression at Forrest Behavioral Health

Treatment begins with a comprehensive psychiatric and psychological evaluation. From there, your care team builds an individualized plan that combines the right level of care, evidence-based therapy, and medication management when appropriate. Most clients see meaningful improvement within weeks, and we adjust the plan as you progress.

Day Treatment Program (PHP)

Our day treatment program provides structured, full-day care five days a week for people whose depression is severe enough that weekly therapy is not enough, but who do not need overnight hospitalization. Clients attend group and individual therapy, psychiatric care, and skills training, then return home each evening.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

The intensive outpatient program meets several times a week for about three hours per session. It is a strong fit for moderate depression, for stepping down from day treatment, or for anyone who needs more support than a single weekly appointment. An evening IOP is available for clients who work or attend school during the day.

Outpatient Therapy

Our standard outpatient program offers individual and group therapy once or twice a week to maintain progress, prevent relapse into depression, and continue building coping skills after a higher level of care.

Evidence-Based Therapies

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) helps you identify and change the negative thought patterns that fuel depression. Dialectical behavior therapy (DBT) builds skills for managing painful emotions and improving relationships. Behavioral activation, interpersonal therapy, and trauma-focused approaches are used when they fit your history and goals.

Psychiatric Care and Medication Management

Antidepressant medication can be an important part of recovery, especially for moderate to severe depression. Our psychiatric providers evaluate whether medication is appropriate, prescribe and monitor it carefully, and coordinate closely with your therapist so that medication and therapy work together.

Dual Diagnosis Treatment

Many people with depression also use alcohol or drugs to cope, which ultimately deepens the depression. Our dual diagnosis program treats depression and substance use at the same time, by the same team, rather than sending you to two separate providers.

Frequently Asked Questions About Depression Treatment

How do I know if I need treatment for depression?

If low mood, loss of interest, or exhaustion has lasted more than two weeks and is affecting your work, relationships, or ability to care for yourself, it is time to talk to a professional. You can start with our free, confidential depression self-assessment (PHQ-9), then call us to discuss the results.

Does insurance cover depression treatment in Illinois?

Most major insurance plans cover outpatient mental health treatment, including PHP and IOP. We accept many commercial plans and will verify your benefits for free before you commit to anything. Self-pay options and financial assistance are also available.

How long does depression treatment take?

It depends on severity and the level of care. Day treatment typically lasts two to four weeks, IOP six to twelve weeks, and outpatient therapy continues as long as it is helpful. Many clients notice improvement within the first few weeks.

Can I keep working while in treatment?

Yes. Our evening IOP and standard outpatient options are designed for people who need to keep their work or school schedule. Day treatment is more intensive, and our team can provide documentation for short-term leave if needed.

Other Programs

Outpatient Program (OP)

The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.

Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)

Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
