Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) in Illinois
Cognitive behavioral therapy is the most researched form of talk therapy in the world, and for good reason: it works. CBT teaches you to notice the thoughts and beliefs that drive painful emotions and unhelpful behavior, test them against reality, and build new patterns that hold up under pressure.
Forrest Behavioral Health uses CBT across all of our programs in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, for depression, anxiety, trauma, OCD, bipolar disorder, and substance use. Our licensed therapists tailor it to your situation rather than working from a script.

What Is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy?
CBT is based on a simple idea: how we think affects how we feel and what we do. When someone is depressed or anxious, their thinking tends to become distorted in predictable ways, such as expecting the worst, taking things personally, or seeing everything in black and white. Those thoughts produce emotions, and the emotions drive behavior like avoidance or withdrawal that keeps the cycle going.
In CBT, you and your therapist map that cycle for your specific situation, then work on both ends of it. You learn to catch and challenge distorted thoughts in the moment, and you take on behavioral experiments and assignments between sessions that build evidence against the old beliefs. CBT is structured, goal-oriented, and usually time-limited, with most courses running twelve to twenty sessions.

Frequently Asked Questions About CBT
How long does CBT take to work?
Many people notice changes within the first few weeks, and a full course typically runs twelve to twenty sessions. In our IOP and day treatment programs, where sessions happen several times a week, progress tends to be faster.
Is CBT just positive thinking?
No. CBT is about accurate thinking, not positive thinking. The goal is to evaluate thoughts against evidence, which sometimes means accepting hard truths while letting go of distortions that make them worse.
Does insurance cover this therapy?
Most commercial insurance plans cover evidence-based therapy delivered through outpatient, IOP, and PHP programs. We will verify your benefits for free before you begin.
Is it available by telehealth?
Yes. We offer in-person sessions at our Hoffman Estates clinic and secure video sessions for clients anywhere in Illinois.
What if I am in crisis right now?
If you are in danger or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline, or go to the nearest emergency room.

Other Programs
Outpatient Program (OP)
The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
