PTSD & Trauma Treatment in Illinois
Trauma changes how the brain and body respond to the world. Long after a frightening or painful event has passed, the nervous system can stay stuck in survival mode, producing flashbacks, nightmares, constant alertness, and emotional numbness. Post-traumatic stress disorder is a real, diagnosable condition, and it is treatable.
Forrest Behavioral Health provides trauma-informed PTSD treatment in Hoffman Estates, Illinois, serving veterans, first responders, survivors of abuse or assault, and anyone whose life has been shaped by trauma across the Chicago suburbs. Our programs range from full-day treatment to flexible evening and outpatient care.

What Is PTSD?
Post-traumatic stress disorder can develop after experiencing or witnessing a life-threatening or deeply distressing event, such as combat, assault, a serious accident, abuse, a medical emergency, or the sudden loss of a loved one. Symptoms generally fall into four groups: re-experiencing the trauma, avoiding reminders of it, negative changes in mood and thinking, and heightened arousal or reactivity.
Complex PTSD can result from prolonged or repeated trauma, especially in childhood, and often includes difficulty with emotional regulation, relationships, and self-worth. Many people with PTSD also struggle with depression, anxiety, or substance use. Our clinicians assess the full picture so that treatment addresses the trauma itself rather than just the symptoms it creates.

How We Treat PTSD and Trauma at Forrest Behavioral Health
Every program at Forrest Behavioral Health is trauma-informed, which means safety, choice, and trust are built into how care is delivered. After a comprehensive evaluation, your care team recommends a level of care and a treatment plan centered on therapies with strong evidence for PTSD.
Day Treatment Program (PHP)
When trauma symptoms are severe and daily functioning has broken down, our day treatment program offers structured full-day care five days a week with trauma-focused individual therapy, skills groups, and psychiatric support, while allowing you to sleep in your own home.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program provides several sessions a week of trauma-focused treatment with the flexibility to keep up with work and family. An evening IOP is available for daytime workers, students, and shift workers.
Outpatient Therapy
Ongoing weekly therapy through our outpatient program supports long-term healing, helps you manage triggers as they come up, and provides continuity after a higher level of care.
Trauma-Focused Therapies
We use approaches with strong research support for PTSD, including trauma-focused cognitive behavioral therapy, cognitive processing therapy, and EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing), which helps the brain reprocess traumatic memories so they lose their intensity. DBT skills help with emotional regulation and distress tolerance along the way.
Psychiatric Care and Medication Management
Medication can reduce the intensity of PTSD symptoms such as nightmares, hyperarousal, and depression, making therapy more effective. Our psychiatric providers evaluate whether medication is appropriate and coordinate closely with your therapist.
Dual Diagnosis Treatment
Trauma and substance use are deeply linked. Many people drink or use to escape memories, and many develop PTSD during active addiction. Our dual diagnosis program treats both at the same time with one integrated team.
Frequently Asked Questions About PTSD Treatment
Can I have PTSD if I was not in the military?
Yes. PTSD can follow any traumatic experience, including car accidents, assault, domestic violence, childhood abuse, medical trauma, or the sudden death of someone close. Veterans and first responders are at higher risk, but most people with PTSD are civilians.
Will I have to talk about the trauma in detail?
Not before you are ready. Trauma-informed treatment moves at your pace. Early work focuses on safety, stabilization, and coping skills; processing the trauma itself happens only when you and your therapist agree the time is right, and some approaches, like EMDR, require less verbal detail than people expect.
Does insurance cover PTSD treatment in Illinois?
Most commercial insurance plans cover outpatient trauma treatment, including PHP and IOP. We will verify your benefits for free before you start, and self-pay options are available.
How long does PTSD treatment take?
It varies. Many people see significant symptom reduction within eight to sixteen weeks of focused trauma therapy. More complex or long-standing trauma may take longer, and we adjust the plan as you progress.
Do you offer telehealth for trauma treatment?
Yes. We provide in-person care in Hoffman Estates and secure telehealth for clients anywhere in Illinois.
What if I am in crisis right now?
If you are in danger or having thoughts of harming yourself, call or text 988 to reach the Suicide & Crisis Lifeline. Veterans can press 1 to reach the Veterans Crisis Line. Once you are safe, we can help you take the next step.

Other Programs
Outpatient Program (OP)
The outpatient program at our rehab is tailored to those who have completed higher levels of care or require a less intensive treatment approach due to their stage in recovery. During standard outpatient treatment, clients engage in therapy sessions once or twice a week, focusing on maintaining sobriety, strengthening coping mechanisms, and continuing personal growth in recovery. This flexible program is designed to support clients as they navigate the challenges of everyday life, providing ongoing support and resources while allowing them to fulfill their personal, professional, and family commitments. It’s an ideal solution for long-term recovery management, offering a supportive network and professional guidance as clients build a fulfilling, sober life.
Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP)
Our intensive outpatient program is designed for individuals who need more support than standard outpatient treatment but have a stable living situation that supports their recovery journey. An intensive outpatient program involves attending therapy sessions and group meetings several times a week, often during evenings or weekends, to accommodate work or school schedules. This level of care allows clients to integrate real-world experiences into their treatment, applying learned skills in daily life while maintaining a strong connection to support and guidance. The focus is on developing personal accountability, understanding the root causes of addiction, and building a sustainable recovery plan.
